Our Place in the Willamette Valley

To understand Carlton is to understand the land that surrounds it.

We are fortunate to call the Willamette Valley home—one of the world's most respected cool-climate winegrowing regions and a place that has become synonymous with exceptional Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and beautifully expressive wines.

The Willamette Valley was officially recognized as an American Viticultural Area, or AVA, in 1983. As Oregon's wine industry grew, smaller areas within the valley began to be recognized for their own distinctive soils, elevations, climates and growing conditions.

One of those special places is our own Yamhill-Carlton AVA, established in 2004.

Centered around the communities of Carlton and Yamhill, the AVA rests among the foothills of Oregon's Coast Range. Its rolling hills, protective geography and ancient marine sedimentary soils create remarkable growing conditions—particularly for Pinot Noir.

For us, this isn't simply wine country.

It's our neighborhood.

The Bay House Wine Shop is surrounded by vineyards, growers and winemakers who have helped build the reputation of Oregon wine one vintage at a time. We believe being part of this community comes with an opportunity—and a responsibility—to celebrate the wines being made just beyond our door.

Our collection will always reach beyond Oregon, because discovering great wines from around the world is part of who we are. But here in Carlton, the wines of the Willamette Valley will have a very special place at The Bay House Wine Shop.
